DEPOSITIO OF CHRIST IN THE TOMB, by Giovanni della Robbia. Church of St. Mary of Angels Altar to the right. Donated by the Rucellai family in Florence. Size: height m. 1.90; width m. 1.92. The body of the Redeemer, the center is supported by two angels, His arms are supported by the Virgin and St. John kneeling. Over the Body of Christ, the Cross of the symbols of passion. Eight angels are arranged four to the right and four to the left of the Cross. The upper frame is adorned with the heads seven cherubs. The base goes from left to right, the figures: St. Salomea, St. Elizabeth of Hungary St. Catherine of Alexandria, Virgin and Child, St. Mary Magdalene, St. Clare of Assisi St. Cecilia. On either side of the base are depicted the Holy Name of Jesus to the left and the Crest of the Rucellai to the right. The side pillars are festooned with flowers. |
