ASSUMPTION OF SS. MARY IN THE HEAVENS Andrea Della Robbia. Church of Saint Mary of Angels: Main Altar. Donated by Bartoli and Ruccellai families Florence. Size: height m. 3.72; width m. 2,42 consists of 325 pieces. In the central part, above, sits the Virgin which encircle the heads of eleven cherubs. She is supported by four angels, two on each side. The first figure kneeling, from left is St. Gregory the Great pope, while the second has been identified with the apostle St. Thomas, as is apparent from an apocryphal gospel, he receives Girdle of the Holy Virgin. At the center, below the tomb of Mary. covered with flowers. The first figure to the right of the sarcophagus represents S. Francis behind him St. Bonaventura. Above the center Eternal Father blessing , between two angels who pray. The bezel rests on a frame adorned nine seraphim. In the bottom center of the Tabernacle, surrounded by flowers and leaves on the right and left, two angels each side, who are holding the tapes, Gospel with the following inscriptions: "Ego sum Panis Vivus, de celo descendit here.
